After a brief discussion today about whether it is called the Port of Long Beach or the Port of Los Angeles, it was determined that they are in fact two separate container ports in Southern California. The two ports are adjacent and are the two busiest container ports in the United States.
The city boundary of Los Angeles extends south through a sliver of gridlocked 110 interstate to the Los Angeles port and the area known as San Pedro. Immediately to the east is Long Beach and the Port of Long Beach, which is, as discussed earlier, an entirely separate port.
This sliver of land connecting the city with the port is similar to the Denver International Airport:
The Denver International Airport is the largest airport in North America by land and the second largest in the world. It is also a port.

I went to Denver for the first time in 2017, and I was astounded by how long it took to drive from the first airport entrance sign to the actual terminal, with no traffic, at a full 65-70 mph. It must have been 5-10 minutes of empty land. The airport property is immense.

I would frequently cross the Vincent Thomas bridge in the free direction (when it had a toll) and enjoy the view. It was promised that when the bridge was paid off both directions would be free, and they kept to their word. Now I haven’t lived in that area in over 7 years so I don’t know if they put a toll on that bridge again, but it was nice to see an government agency stick to their word and not gouge citizens for every nickel and dime.
On the coast of Long Beach, near one of my old favorite hangouts, Chuck’s Coffee Shop, there are a bunch of little islands - Island Chaffee, Island White and Island Grissom. These are named for the three astronauts that died in the Apollo 1 fire in 1967. The next town over, Seal Beach in Orange County, was home to a Rockwell plant where a number of rockets for the Apollo program were built, hence the naming of these islands in honor of these men.

We were four stops away from the airport two weeks ago by train and it took 30 minutes!

I drove that bridge eastbound a couple months ago and didn’t pay a toll, nor did I see any toll collection on the other side. It is a nice view.
Never knew about the Apollo 1 islands, very interesting .

Here in Indianapolis, we’re still paying a restaurant tax imposed to build the Hoosier Dome (later RCA Dome, now gone completely) in 1981.
Of course, we still owe on the bonds, nearly 40 years later, but I’m not optimistic the tax will go away.

And of course there’s this stunning bit of design:
Unfortunately, it can be pretty impossible to search for USB/port/wine and even Peltier are unlikely to give you what you want.

Also fun fact - our nation’s top urban renewal experts predict that by 1971, the Port of Long Beach will become one of America’s top tourist destinations, with elegant restaurants, a luxury hotel, a world class undersea museum, modern convention center, and upscale shopping, all connected to vibrant downtown Long Beach by aerial tramway.
